Definition of Andragogy and Pedagogy

Many experts have written about Education of Adults (andragogy) and Children Education (Pedagogy) and made a lot of formulas about it in accordance with their own perceptions. The experts generally view education of adult as a form of education that is essentially different from the concept of children education at school.

Adult education started being organized systematically in 1920. At that time, education was defined as a process that created a desire to ask and lifelong learning. Learning for adults is how to direct themselves to always ask questions and seek answers.
Adult education (andragogy) is different from children education (Pedagogy). Children education will take place in the form of assimilation, identification, and impersonation. Children education is the provision of basic knowledge, mental and moral formation and civic education. While adult education is more focused on improving their life, providing the skills and ability to solve the problems they face in their life and society.
The word "andragogy" comes from Greek, aner or andr means a person (not a child) and agogus means directing himself. Thus, the result of adult education is a graduate (adult) as educational target that can direct him and become a teacher for him.
Adult education is a process when a person, in particular time, follows the regular education based on the need to solve the problem of him or society because of changes in information, knowledge or skills, appreciation and attitude. The definition of andragogy or Adult Education by UNESCO (1976) is an educational process that the content, level and method are organized in formal and non-formal to meet the needs to complete education in schools in order to improve, enrich knowledge, acquire skills, and bring change one's attitude as a power builder who is able to participate actively in the development of economic, social and culture.
The difference between children and adults has important implications in the learning process. When seen from age, less than 16 years old are categorized as children, while adults are categorized as aged above.
