Mean, Median, Mode
1. Mean (Average)
Mean definition is a technique of group description based on the average value of the group. Average (mean) is obtained by summing the data of all individuals in the group, and then divided by the number of individuals in the group.
For example:
The monthly income of all employees in a company in units of thousands rupiahs are as follows:
90, 120, 160, 60, 180, 190, 90, 180, 70, 160
To find the mean or average of the data, it does not need to be in sort as in finding the median value, but it can be directly summed, then divided by the number of individuals in the group. Based on the data above, the mean can be calculated:
Me: (90 + 120 + 160 + 60 + 190 +180 + 90 + 180 + 70 + 160): 10 = 130 thousand rupiahs.
So the income average of employees in the company is Rp. 130,000.
2. Median (Middle Value)
Median definition is one of the group description techniques based on the median of the set of data that has been arranged in sequence from the smallest to the largest, or from the largest to the smallest.
For example:
The observation results of employees’ age in the office X are:
20, 45, 60, 56, 45, 45, 20, 19, 57, 45, 45, 51, 35
To be able to search for the median, the data above must be arranged in advance. It is as follows:
19, 20, 20, 35, 45, 45, 45, 45, 45, 51, 56, 57, 60
The middle value of the above data is at the sequence of 7, that is 45. So the median is 45.
3. Mode (Value occurs most frequently)
The definition of mode is a technique of group description based on the value of the group that are popular (which is becoming a mode) or value that occurs most frequently.
Mode Sample on Qualitative Data:
In 1970 in Yogyakarta, many students rode a bike. So, it can be explained by the mode that the group of students in Yogyakarta is still ride a bike.
Mode Sample on Quantitative Data:
Ages of Y office workers are:
20, 45, 60, 56, 45, 45, 20, 19, 57, 45, 45, 51, 35
From the data above, it can be seen that the value that most occurs frequently is 45. The appearance is as much as 5 times, so it can be explained that the group of office workers Y are mostly aged 45 years.
