The Frail Elderly
The frail older person is one who is probably older than 75 and requires some supportive services to cope with daily living. As advanced medical technology keeps more and more older people alive, society must be responsible for helping them achieve a high quality of life regardless of functional problems.
This means that in order for older persons to remain at home, more opportunities for home help are needed. More alternatives, such as nursing homes, residences with supervised activities and prepared meals, foster homes, and adult day care centers should be made available. Support networks that offer education for self care, crisis “hot lines”, and access to nursing services and supervision will be in demand. Expanded opportunities for community nursing should be an outcome of programs that seek to keep the frail elderly at home.
